THE ARCHITECTURE OF BREATH & BANDHAS

A 2-Day Immersion in South London

Location: Zen Studio, 24A Camberwell Grove, London SE5 8RE, United Kingdom

Breath is often reduced to a technique — slow down, deepen, or consciously control.

Bandhas are often taught as something to do — lift, squeeze, and hold.

Often they’re presented as separate methods. But without understanding how they function as one integrated system, the picture remains incomplete.

This immersion brings equal attention to breath and

bandhas — exploring how they function individually, and

how they are intrinsically linked.

Across the weekend, we’ll explore how breath mechanics,

chemistry, and the nervous system interact — and how this

directly informs bandha practice, organising the body

through a clear internal relationship.

We’ll break down how the diaphragm, ribcage, pelvic floor, and abdominal system coordinate, and how this shapes movement, stability, and internal state, both on and off the mat.

Within this framework, bandhas are not approached as abstract “locks”, but responsive internal support that arises from well-organised breath and pressure — creating a sense of lightness and control.

While their effects feel energetic in nature, the entry point into bandhas is physical and accessible; and can be developed progressively and safely.

We’ll also look at dysfunctional breathing patterns: how they present, and how they may contribute to issues such as anxiety, poor sleep, and pelvic floor dysfunction. From here, you’ll learn practical tools to work with these patterns both in your own practice and when supporting others.

And importantly, we’ll explore how their application changes across contexts, namely in pranayama versus asana. Understanding this distinction allows for more precise and effective practice. Throughout the immersion, we draw from modern physiology, neuroscience, and yogic frameworks — offering context and nuance without losing practicality.

In terms of practice, we’ll work with:

  • Classical pranayama techniques such as Anulom Vilom, Bhramari, and Kapalabhati
  • Contemporary methods including air hunger training, triangle breathing, and box breathing
  • The foundations of Mula, Uddiyana, and Jalandhara Bandha, and their integration into Maha
  • Bandha

This immersion combines education with direct application. You’ll also receive a detailed handout (online pdf), designed to support integration beyond the immersion.
